All over God's creation I find talk of the '85-87 442 having an 8.5 rear. But did the H/O have one? Or did it just have the 7 5/8 or whatever that was that the Monte SS had?

While we're at it, did the 442 or H/O ever have a 3.42 like the Regal GN or only the 3.73?

You guys love a little easy trivia don't you? I mean, I'm not asking about Bee Gees album names or anything...

P.S. All questions relate only to G-body years

I have heard the 84 H/O had an 8.5 in it. And I believe they all came with 3.73's.

Rob

That's correct.
The '83 H/O came with the 7.5.The '84 had the 8.5.
The H/Os and 442s came with 3.73s,the GN had 3.42s.

Sounds good to me! An 8.5" and 3.73 gears is perfect. I'd like to get ahold of one of those cars. Thats good to know

they are pretty hard to get ....

im still looking for one ,to put on my 84 cutlass project
unless i put my 95 impala ss diff under it & install 5.0" backspacing wheels

84 ss monte's iv had only had 3;42 7.5 in them...trunk sticker says gu6 for this rearend and gears ...from what i can remember only 1987 SS monte's ever had 8.5 rearends with only 3;73....and from all the montes iv had iv never had an 8.5 ....yet.

I also had a 7 5/8 open dif from a 84 SS that I put in my Cutlass that was 3.42.

monte's never had the 8.5, just the 7.625. 84 hurst olds, grand national's, gnx's, and at least some 442's are the only g-bodies to have the 8.5. what you can do is get a regular 8.5 and have the proper mounts welded on, especially if you are putting on floater style bearings.

None of the Monte SS cars ever had a 8.5, all were either 7.5 or 7.625 10 bolts. All MCSS' with the turbo 350 ( first year or two) had the 3.42 ratio but the ones with the OD TH200-4R all had the 3.73. The later Turbo Regals ( I say this because the drivetrain was an option on all 2 door Regals and not just the GN or T-Type) all had the 3.42 axle ratio and 8.5 10 bolt. Early Turbo Regals ( Turbo 3.8's were available starting in 1978 or 79) used a different ratio and the 7.5 axle.

Interestingly, there were Turbo Monte Carlos as well that were available for a year or two in the early 80's or late 70's. There may have been other A/G body applications of the carburated turbo 3.8 as well since GM used turbo variants of the engine in a variety of cars including the FWD Riviera.

I am curious though, if anyone has tried to take a B body 8.5 and have it narrowed then added the G body LCA mounts. Would the UCA housing side mounts bolt to the G body UCA's? Then again, the whole process may cost more when it's done than just buying the G body axle assembly in the first place...
