Once started there was no turning back. First problem encountered was trying to take the axles out. I ended up snapping the 5/16 bolt that holds the cross shaft. Did I curse! The last time that happened I ended up destroying the case. Well, lucky me I got it out with an EZ out. After that the swap was problem free. I did have to do some fabbing. I had to fab a bracket to hold the rubber hose from the caliper to the hard brake line. The only thing missing now is a posi tag.

I'm full of all kinds of questions because I'm looking to do the same to my 8.5. What or where did the disc brakes come from? How big and does it have a working E-brake?

The disc set up came off a 2000 S10 Blazer 4wd with 4 wheel disc brakes. The entire backing plate and caliper assembly off the rear is needed minus the rotors. The rotors needed will have to come off a 2000 S10 Blazer 2wd with 4 wheel disc brakes. It does have a provision for the parking brake. That part I haven't figured out since the rear is not installed in the car yet. I'm hoping to adapt the Blazer set up some how. Forgot to mention earlier that a spacer will be needed between the axle flange and the backing plate assembly. The entire assembly needs to come outward to prevent the caliper assembly from hitting the frame if ever the back end was to bottom out on the snubber. From my measurements this spacer should be 1/4' thick. By bringing this out, longer wheel studs will be needed. I was thinking that the spacer is really not needed since the back end rarely gets weighed down to the point where it bottoms out on the snubber. I wish I can install it in the car and see what actually works. Spacer or no spacer and work out the parking brake issue. Waiting until I have enough $$$ for my crate motor.

OOOOOOOOOOO I wondered about the blazer parts . I got complete 2001 s10 rear that is getting scrapped .

I was looking at it just the other day . I dont know of I want to do it on the 442 but I may pull the parts anyway for future ref.

SO its a bolt on other than putting a spacer for the clearance ?

Yes, it's pretty much a bolt on swap. You do need to cut down the flange to more of a square shape and redrill 2 existing holes out and make 2 need holes in the flange (25/64 drill bit).

Did the S10 Blazer have the 8.5 or the 7.65 rear axle?

The Blazer had the 7.65. Apparently, the 8.5's are quite rare and the caliper assembly sits in the back. The rear disc look like they measure out 11 5/8".
I was hoping you got it from the 7.65. As like you said, the 8.5 is quite rare in a S10. I always keep my eye open when walking around junkyards looking for a 2wd 8.5. The 2wd 8.5's are highly sought after by the guys running a V8. Most junkyards don't know what they're worth and let them go cheap. Not any good for a G-body, but easy way to make some cash.

Both S10's and Blazer's did come with options for an 8.5" rear although they are alot more rare on an S10. Usually a 4.3L with a 5-speed will have an 8.5" but like said, it's not always the case. Blazer's did also have them but the ZR2's had them as well but the housing is wider because the ZR2 frame is also wider than a normal Blazer.

This is a great swap though. I like the way that the rear parking brake is inside the rotor. It's alot easier to work on if you don't have the tool to pull the caliper off. Although sometimes when you don't use your parking brake, they can create a rust ridge inside the rotor very similar to a drum brake.

What do you plan on doing for a proportioning valve?

Very nice swap though, do you have any part numbers by any chance? Hopefully you can get the rear end back in the car soon!
