Will 8 inch wide rear wheels work without tubbing? How much do they stick out past the wheel wells?

With the right backspace an 8" wheel will fit in the wheel wells, depending on tire choice.

I plan to use BFG radial T/As 235/70 R15s what backspacing did you use?

I do not have 8" wheels on mine, but I have seen it done. I will leave this for someone with actual numbers, but a 235 should fit with an 8" wheel no problem, with the right backspace.

Excellent.... I have the stock rear end in it. That's what I want.... looks great!

I have seen several threads that say 4" backspace, and will fit a 275/60/15, but lilbowtie has real world experience.

With 8" rims, anything from 3.5" to 4.3" BS will work with most tires up to 255.

4" is ideal. 3.5" is going to need fender rolling on most G-bodies with larger tires.

Not sticking out past the wheels wells is different from not scraping the fender on every bump.

The main thing is which body of car you have, Regal's and Cutlass's have a more open wheel well than say a Malibu...oddly enough though, the El Camino has a larger wheel well.

My Malibu has 255-60-15's on 8 inch 1980 Corvette aluminum rally/slot wheels.
