I just got a steal on a 83 cutty but I have been driving it for the last three days and it seems to pick up speed slow and takes awhile to change gears not sure if this is normal or not..I was wondering if the gas pedal needs to be adjusted or the distributor cap or something.. what would cause this problem so I can get it fixed?

What do you mean it's slow to pick up speed...how slow?

What engine do you have?

they are SLOW from the factory. 307 is a reliable motor , just a dog performance wise. dont think the H/O are any better. i have one. slow as well.

picks up slow

well its a 307 v8 5.0 L it hits 2nd gear at 20 mph then 3rd at 40 mph but I mean if you don't gas it real hard it takes awhile for it to reach the next gear so therefore its slow does anyone else have this problem or know how to fix it?

I'm, not sure. I bought my Cutlass with a 455 big block in it so it wouldn't have this problem 🙂

do you have a tach on your car to see what the rpms are when it switches gears like that? or when you have to 'gas it real hard'? Sounds normal to me for an old 307/th200 combo. It's a four barrel without much power so you're not going anywhere in a hurry without the secondaries opening.

Tune the carb, do all your normal maintenance on the engine/trans and see how it runs afterward... (i feel like this is the only advice I give people but you gotta start somewhere)
