I'm new to the forum. I have an '83 Hurst/Olds that I've had for about 15 years now. It has the T-Tops and gray interior. It has seen regular use on and off the entire time I've owned it, it's all original numbers matching, and has 180K miles on it. She's tired, and needs to be brought back to life. Despite the miles, the motor is still solid and I want to drive it until it dies. The smog pump has been off for a few years now, the air tubes have completely rusted through on the passenger side and leak exhaust like crazy, and I'm sure half of what is there isn't working properly anymore. Yesterday, the passenger side muffler fell off, and so it's looking like I need to replace the exhaust system. I'm trying to decide if I should keep it 100% original, fix what's there by replacing the air pump and rusted tubes and try to get all the emissions working properly, or to eliminate the emissions system altogether. Plus I need to do the exhaust system. Do any of you guys have any suggestions or recommendations for me? Any and all assistance is appreciated! 😀

How about posting some photos of it?
www.rockauto.com has everything you need to properly fix it, where are you located?
Keep it original as much as you can, that's a very rare car and not many of them left especially in sand gray. Seems like most just start molesting it and lose interest... don't go sticking a Chubby engine in it either, sell it to someone who will enjoy it before desecrating it...

I always support keeping things original. I would try to get the motor rebuilt if it needs to be, just to keep it numbers matching. Then look for all the original AIR tubes and replace the smog pump. Just definately dont ever put a chevy motor in there. At least keep it olds. But its your car so just have fun with it.

I've always been an Oldsmobile guy through and true. If I were to replace the factory motor I'd put either a 330, or 68-70 350 built to the ram-rod specs. But as I've gotten older, I've come to appreciate this Olds for what it is and I wan to keep it numbers matching and as original as possible. This car is completely original, other than one repaint done about 20 years ago. It still has the original radio even! Eventually, I'll to a mild rebuild of the engine, but in the mean time I wan to see how long it will go before it dies. As I said, at 180K now and I believe she has more life in her yet.

I'm located in CT, and I will post some pictures once I get some recent ones taken. Again, I'm just at the beginning of what I hope turns into a fun drive as I go restoration project. Eventually I'll probably have to restore the interior. Does anyone know where I can find the correct gray cloth, or correct replacement door panels and front seat covers?

I've got a bunch of Sand Gray stuff, PM sent.

My opinion I would build a 455/425/403 and transmission like http://www.robertpowersmotorsports.com. Or have someone like BTR build one for you and finance it. Not real fancy or high dollar. Make it a great fun fast enjoyable reliable weekend driver. Bob ran 12.3@110mph and got 15 hwy on pump gas with full exhaust AC & power brakes still dialing it in when it was stolen. Put the vin 9 307 under the workbench for safekeeping in case one day somebody wants to give you stupid money for the car for a concors type restoration. Repaint & stripe it original & build it like Olds would have liked to.

You can drive the 307 while you build a motor for you. Another example is Dwights 455 Olds Cutlass on Car domain. It was featured in magazines runs 12.0s get close to 20 mpg hwy. Same recepie overdrive trans, lockup converter, Q-jet, ported heads but mild cam another drive it anywhere car. Something that would make a power tour cruise real fun. Another example was my 442 but it was Cadillac 500 powered. No cutting welding etc so the vin 9 could go back. Unfortunately I needed money and someone asked what I would take and I let it go for 7k. But I still miss her today because I built it and it was so much fun to drive. It wasn't any faster didn't turn as many heads and ate more fuel but was more fun to stop light cruise than my GN. My buddy who has a 9 second BBC 66 Chevelle drag car envied it because we had fun in mine all the time but only occationally could trailer his to the track.
