Re: 84 Cutlass Supreme Brougham Sedan

Well can I tell if it is a 2 or 4 barrel just by looking at it?

I was thinking.. If I put a new rear differential on her with a higher gear ratio, would that put more wear and tear on engine and transmission?

the above is a 2 barrel (dualjet carb)

the above is a 4 barrel (quadrajet carb)

If it is a factory setup, you should have the dualjet.

If you change the rearend gearing, then you would be running the engine and transmission at higher rpms, so theoretically, yes it would wear them more, along with your axles.

Re: 84 Cutlass Supreme Brougham Sedan

Just wanted to add some advice I got a long time ago:

Never modify your one and only car unless you know and understand exactly what you are doing, or have the money to pay someone to fix it.

Just trying to help, learn from my mistakes

Re: 84 Cutlass Supreme Brougham Sedan

I think I found a name for her. Megatron  She's goin into the shop on Thursday to have a general inspection of the car. My thoughts on the car's problems as is are: Possible carb problem(maybe a tuning issue), transmission leak, and car drains while parked(short somewhere?) All of these problems, and any others that might be found will be fixed. I took some pics today on my phone, they aren't the best, but it'll be arite

Re: 84 Cutlass Supreme Brougham Sedan

Need some more opinions! We loaded her up on the wrecker this morning and took her to the shop. Hopefully we will get a call here pretty soon with a list of whats all wrong with the car. From there we will decide what we need to have the shop repair, and what we can repair ourselves. Wish good luck!!

Re: 84 Cutlass Supreme Brougham Sedan

I think I'm going to make this forum post my main spot for posting questions ect. about my car. I got a new better body shot of her on the wrecker truck. We didn't want to drive her to the shop because of the transmission leak. So just to be on the safe side, we hauled her. 😀

Car on the wrecker headed to the shop

I can't wait to start doing a little work on this car. I hope to learn some basic knowledge about cars while doing so. It'd be nice to have several good followers on this thread to help me out along the way. 8)

Re: 84 Cutlass Supreme Brougham Sedan

So we got a list of what's wrong with the car, and a cost on how much it's going to fix to repair.

New alternator and brake adjustment - 185(Already done to car)
Valve cover gasket, new oil filter, lube - 195 - I need explanation
Transmission pan gasket, new filter - 129
Universal Joint replacement - 175 - I need explanation
Left front Brake caliper and rotor - 143
Spark plugs and wire set - 167 - Since this is an easy fix, I think my friend and I are going to do this.
