So we got a list of what's wrong with the car, and a cost on how much it's going to fix to repair.

New alternator and brake adjustment - 185(Already done to car)
Valve cover gasket, new oil filter, lube - 195 - I need explanation
Transmission pan gasket, new filter - 129
Universal Joint replacement - 175 - I need explanation
Left front Brake caliper and rotor - 143
Spark plugs and wire set - 167 - Since this is an easy fix, I think my friend and I are going to do this.

Why dont you do most of this stuff? If your mechanically inclined you would save yourself a boat loaf of $$.. Nothing listed is really that hard. I don't beleive you will even need any special tools. Especialy the U joint replacement.. $175 for a $10 dollar part and 15-20 minutes time...

I'm not mechanically inclined, but I have a close friend who is. Could you explain what all needs to be done? I have little understanding about that list.

Re: 84 Cutlass Supreme Brougham Sedan

Valve cover gasket, new oil filter, lube - 195 - Basic oil change an filter.. $30 ; unscrew plug from oil pan, remove filter.. replace filter filll with oil..Gaskets are about $15 bucks. Remove 4 bolts from valve covers clean up head where where gaket sits and replace.. might have to move a few things out the way but nothing hard.

Transmission pan gasket, new filter - 129 --Gasket and filter around $20+cost of transmission fluid- remove transmission oil pan drain oil replace filter and put in new gasket on pan. (a little more difficult but still very easy).

Universal Joint replacement - 175 - this is fairly simple just a few bolts and nuts and remove old u joint and replace.

If your friend knows his way around some tools. I really dont see why you guys cant tackle it all 🙂

Re: 84 Cutlass Supreme Brougham Sedan

I just talked to my buddy and he said we could do it. Now I need to find the parts. Where would I be able to find the parts numbers that I need for this car?

Re: 84 Cutlass Supreme Brougham Sedan

All you need to do is go to your local car parts supplier, tell them what kind of car you have (year, model, engine), and tell them what you want. By the way, looks like she's in good shape, keep the 4-doors alive

Re: 84 Cutlass Supreme Brougham Sedan

Yep! Love the four doors! She is in VERY good shape. Garage kept her whole life. Still has original paint!!! Everyone that has seen this car has been very impressed by the condition it's in. She runs and drives so smooth its crazy

We figured out that there was no transmission leak. The leak that we saw was from the valve cover. Tomorrow, we are making our last trip to the mechanic shop! We are getting the U-joints fixed. After that, all she needs is spark plugs and front left brake caliper! My buddy and I are doing the spark plugs and brakes.

I'm starting to look into rims. I either want to get 20's or 22's. I want the rims to be FIVE SPOKE. NOTHING else. I have read that if I want to put 22's on my car that I won't need to lift, but a suspension upgrade would probably be required because of the weight of the new rims. I'd like to avoid a suspension upgrade due to budget. But I got to thinking about it. Wouldn't 5 spoke 22's weigh less than other 22's? And if they weighed less, would I be able the avoid the suspension upgrade?

Thanks and any input is greatly appreciated! 😀

Well, after driving her a few miles, the oil/choke light, battery charge light, and check engine light have all came on.

Oil/Choke: The car was leaking from the valve cover, so we replaced the valve cover gasket and leak was fixed. The car seems to have a bit of a hard time idling if you drive it for a while and then try to let it idle. When you first start to accelerate, the car seems to give out a little bit; but if you let off the gas a little, it goes fine.

Battery charge: I have no idea why the battery charge light is on. It was on when we got it. The problem was it needed a new alternator and wouldn't stay charged. We replaced the alternator, and now she stays charged; but the light is still on. I think this case is a perfect instance for why they call them Idiot lights.

Check Engine: After driving the car around a few miles, the check engine light came on. I know I need new spark plugs & wires and distributor cap & rotor. Could this be the problem?

Any ideas of what I should check? Any input would be greatly appreciated 🙂

hi, this is a little off topic but i also recently acquired an 1984 4 door cutlass supreme and it is missing the casing for the air filter. i just ordered one off of ebay but the filter is only the housing without a bottom pin or anything, do you think you could post some pics of the assembly of your air filter? it would be greatly appreciated. thanks!
