can you remove the resevoir and wash it out dirt is never good
x2. Remove the reservoir tank & clean/rinse it out as good as you can. No sense introducing dirt into the water passages if it's avoidable w/minimal effort.

Dirt in the reservoir means dirt/rust in the system. You know it's not originating in the reservoir. Rather than just clean the resi, plan to do a complete coolant drain, clean, refill. Doesn't have to be a major ordeal, perhaps just a coolant flush procedure to clean some trash out then refill with distilled water and proper coolant.
 
It's possible that someone allowed dirt into the overflow tank when they opened it in the past, but you've been given good info because that dirt is probably also mixed into the entire system by now.
