Rebuild kit? As in gaskets, or are you talking about rings, pistons, etc? Any gasket kit for a small block olds should work, they are all the same for 260-403. Summit has all of that. Don't totally hold me to it but I think the 307 has the same size pistons as a buick 350 and the buick 231 engines. They are 3.80 inch bores.

I've been looking for a rebuild kit for my 86 Y code 307 with no luck. Does anyone know where to get one?

It's better to NOT know where to get a rebuild kit for your engine to discourage you from wasting your money rebuilding that slug.

Oh come on quit rippin on the 307 its a good little cruiser, i would check with a local machine shop. You may have to just piece stuff together.

We're talking about a VIN Y SWIRL PORT 307, which IMO is a complete waste of time and money to rebuild since you can rebuild a different SBO ( even a NON swirl port 307 would be better ) for the same cost or even cheaper ( cheaper pistons and no roller cam ). If you do alot of city driving, a 350 would most likely give you better milage too.

And this is coming from someone who doesn't hate the Olds 307 too. It's just a VIN Y swirl port engine ( combined with the craptastic factory gearing ) are total slugs and offer NOTHING over a 350. Why invest the kind of money it takes to rebuild one of these boat anchors when you can build a better engine for the same or less money OR just drop in an already running 307 for dirt cheap?

The only way rebuilding a VIN Y swirl port 307 is even remotely a decent option would be if you were doing it for your grandpa/grandma who stubbornly insisted on have their '86 Delta 88' completely original for some reason.

So yeah, an Olds 307 ( swirl port or not ) is fine for a daily driver if that's what you already have up and running in your car, but to rebuild one for lots of $$$, then no, it's just a poor investment IMO.

I never owned the swirl port 307. My 5A headed 307's were OK, but the 350 and 403 are massively better with minimal mileage loss.

The 307 is currently in an 86 4 door cutlass that was my first car. I'm attempting to keep it like it was with maybe a few internal modifications. I have to put a quart of oil in every time I change gas and oil pools up in the air cleaner so I figured it was time to start working on it. I knew that summit had the gaskets for it but I was going to see if there was a complete set with gaskets, pistons, rings, ect. I don't need another insanely fast car, I already have a 84 cutlass with t-tops and a 455 almost ready to drop in.

Also with this engine, can the hoses and pump that they have for EGR be removed? Same with some of the sensors, wires, and other miscellaneous tubes crowding the engine compartment or will doing that make the engine not run correctly?

Do a search here. It's been gone over in detail before ( by me and probably others before me ). In a nutshell, most of that garbage can be removed, but if you start yanking, cutting, and hacking before you know what you're doing, you can do more harm then good.

You also need to figure out if you want to keep it on the computer or not. I would suggest keeping it.

I own a couple swirl port VIN9 307's.
If they have a good TH2004R trans behind them, a 3.73 rear end and you don't rip off the computer controls they can be pretty quick and get 14-15mpg.
You can rebuild it, just throw in a VIN 9 cam and springs and find a damper off a 350.
That's all it takes... the 86-87 VIN Y's use the same computer as the VIN9 too.
Gotta remember these motors were designed around the computer for optimal performance with timing and mixture control.
Otherwise go with a 350 for fuel economy or a 455 for added performance.
Any option you choose will cost equally, don't assume because it's a 455 it costs more...
