87 Cutlass Salon newbie

Has anyone taken out 2.56 rear end and installed a 3.73 8.5” or 9” aftermarket complete rear? I want to “build” from the rear to the front. Overdrive transmission is in.

Welcome to the forum, that's a very clean and sharp looking Salon. I dig the black and I definitely need to grab a set of those SS II wheels- they go so well with RWL tires.

I haven't done the 8.5 swap yet myself but multiple members have, and I bet they'll chime in when they see your post. If you check the classifieds there's a member selling a bare Ford 9" housing set up for G Bodies, the 8.5 in the listing is spoken for by me.

Well, I now have 3.73 Posi installed!!! Performance Shop did Rear with my supplied parts. Rigid Axle 7.5 10 bolt Gear and Limited Slip Posi Package w/install Kit 3.73 / 28..........This shop did an Amazing Job putting building this Rear! For all the nay-sayers ( oh, he shouldnt have rebuilt the 7.5 with 3.73's, the car is performing magnificently!! Its not a race/drag car!! I fully expect this rear to hold up for an EXTREMELY long time!!
Transmission Completely Rebuilt by a MASTER TRANSMISSION SHOP and shift points tuned in. I further took out the stock Tachometer and fixed the V8 jumper wire (soldered in myself) and Tach is spot on !!
Axles changed and other misc. parts changed including motor mounts.
Car running great for what it is. A world of difference from the 2.56!! In the cold weather, she runs fast! Thinking of changing hood for cold air intake or cowls...... I now have a 307 that can keep up with or pass any mom in a minivan! Acceleration from the line is awesome! It also sounds great and does move !
Gas consumption UP if car is pushed! Timing tweaked as well. No plans on switching out Quadrajet. After much research, staying put with that Carb.

Wow, gorgeous ride!! I remember making the decision on mine to not have the pinstripe painted back on, but yours reminds me how nice it looked originally; especially without the factory body side moldings. How'd I miss this post, lol ??

Great community here, many super knowledgeable guys in pretty much all things G Body, so belated welcome!

Thank You! only down side if ownership so far was a car club guy ( trans expert NOT) costing me about $1000 on a bad 1st tran repair ( lasted 5 miles, leaked out again) An okd school shop tgats been around for decades fixed that!!!!
Getting stuck no fun, but part of game!

There is nothing wrong with a 7.5 posi rear end. As long as you don’t have high horsepower or jump on it every time the light turns green, you’ll be fine.
I have a little over 450 HP with a 7.5 posi rear with 2.29 freeway gears. While I’m pushing the boundaries, I stay within the limitations of the rearend. However, once it goes, it’s QP 9” for me.

P.S., Ive done my FAST driving in my life in my 34 Police Officer to - Police Inspector career!!
Hear you there... Former FTO and EVOC Instructor.

Sorry to hear about trans issues. Getting harder and harder to find decent shops these days. Too few Techs to understand the older iron. Or anything that doesn't have an OBD II connector.
