advice appreciated on rear end upgrades ( specifically GN /442 8.5 3.73 aftermarket complete rear axle assemblies)

Your best bet is a ferd 9" replacement made to fit a G body. A few have also done the S60, an aftermarket Dana 60. Neither is cheap but an old rusty G body 8.5" isn't pocket change either. Very nice Cutlass.
