I'm just wondering if anybody knows the gear ratio that came in an 87 monte ss and if it will directly bolt into my 79 cutlass salon 442? thanks

3:73 and yes it bolts in

would 3.73's be okay with a th350 trans?
If you dont mind it screaming for another gear down the highway. If its a weekend only car that only sees town your fine. If you take it on the highway your looking at around 27-2800 rpms. And mpg sucks....ask me how I know

I have 3.73s behind my TH400. Great in city but horroble on the highway. I cant wait to get the 700R4 in after the big block is done

my first car was a 86 monte ss with a built 355, th350 and 3.73s great for stop light to stop light it was fun but on the highway doing about 60 mph my tach would read almost dead up 3000 rpm. i ended up busting the gears in it w=and swapped it out with another rear end out of a 78 cutty and i think it had about 2.79 gears, it killed my take off a great bit but goin down the highway at 60 maybe 2100 rpm and interstate about 75 about 2500 rpm for me the higher gears was better because i love to ride and i got more top speed cause it wont redline as quick. with the 2.79s ive down shifted from third to first doing about 60 mph and buy the time i had to shift from second to third i was doin about 115 mph once it hit third the rpms went back down to about 4200 rpm and and i ran out of road long before i redlined which i set my tach to 5500 rpm. by the way motor been blew but the th350 trans is still chirping 2nd gear lol.

gas millage got better around town but on the highway it really didnt change much cause i work about 35 minute away mostly highway and was still getting there and back on $15 aday as with the 3.73s. the guy i bout the rear end from builds race engines said it was beacuse with the 3.73s had my rpm closer to my power band there for making my motor run more efficient and that the 2.79 actually made my motor work harder because it was much lower then my power band and less efficient there for drinking more gas.

all i will really be doing is driving from school and back which is about 1.5 miles and about 45 minutes to a car show on thursdays

If thats it I would definatley go with the 3.73s then. They are a fun gear and like I said I cant wait to get the 700R4 in so I can enjoy it even more.
