Hi,

I just purchased a 88 ss with a 290hp 350 sb. Was running fine no smoke, when I get it home after 150 mile drive I noticed it smells pretty bad and smoking. Not blowing clouds or anything but steady smoke. Sometimes smokes more other times barely seems to smoke. But always had a really nasty smell from exhaust.

Pulled plugs and they were all oily.. Ran compression and results were all 130-135psi.

Motor has under 2000 miles on it with all paper work and looks like it does.

Any ideas where to begin? I've been told it could be valve seals, valve seal guides, piston rings.

Should I do leak down test? Are these compression numbers ok?

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you

does it smoke while driving or only when starting then clears up? does it smoke more after sitting long periods of time and less after short periods of sitting?

Usually smokes right on start up and idle. Can't see any smoke when driving. I asked a friend to drive it and seen no visible smoke while following him in a car.

does it smoke more after sitting all night then starting. and less if you went someplace and started car again after about 1-2 hours?
Seems to be about the same honestly. Maybe a little more if sitting for a while but there isn't much difference.

it is probably valve seals. previous owner may not have have have freshened up the heads when redoing the bottom end. but a leak down test cant hurt either. you can replace seals with the heads still on the motor provided you have the tools and time. or just save up for a set of better flowing heads

Forgot to add to original thread. Motor was brand new crate motor, it was put in the car in 2006 and has only had 2000 miles put on since. So it's been sitting barely drive for a decade or so

After sitting for almost ten years the valve seals may have dried up and hardened.

I replaced the valve seals and unfortunately the car still smokes same as it did before. Any ideas? I guess only thing that comes to mind now is piston rings.

If new valve seals didn't cure it, which I suspect would have, then rings are most likely the culprit. It's almost unlikely, an engine with such few miles on it would smoke. Perhaps it wasn't broken in properly.

What type of oil are you running in it?
