need help trying to find the right and best transmission for my caprice. Recent my reverse went out and now it won't shift from first gear. I thought it was my rear ending at first because it was rattling a little. But once I noticed it didn't shift from first I knew it was my transmission too.

Welcome to the G-body Forum. Your '89 Caprice is actually a B-body. Your transmission may be a 200-4R or a 700R4, unless someone swapped in another previously. It sounds like it's time for a transmission rebuild.

You should have a 700r4 if it is a V8 car.

If you do have the 700 I would get another or have it rebuilt.

If you are not sure what trans you have look at the pan and match it to one of these.

Yeah it's a v8 but it has a 200r4 right now with o/d how much would a rebuild cost? Or could I do that myself since it's my first car I wouldn't mind making it a hands on project.

And what about my rea end making that quiet rattle noise when in reverse and not doing anything. Since my reverse doesn't work. Like I feel it go into reverse but it's doesn't go when I accelerate. But will roll a little.

Your transmission is toast, can't judge the rear end correctly since the transmission is broken. The rear end would need to be physically inspected, but I doubt that it's the problem.

Did someone install the 2004r in it?

Factory trans should have been a 700r4

Unless your in Canada and it has a 307 Olds engine in it.

The Caprice came with either/or. My '90 Caprice has a 200-4R from the factory, but my old '88 Caprice had a 700R4 from the factory.
