so am new to this site and have never posted before so i'm not sure if these questions even go here. I own 2 g-bodys a 84 cutlass with a 70 350 olds and th400 and a 85 regal with sbc 350 center bolt heads, single plane intake with a holley 600 and headman headers with purple hornet glass packs header mufflers to headers.th400 trans on gforce mount.. bought it running driving car for 1000 bucks only thing I have done to it so far is install the header mufflers. the car came with some 2 chamber flowmasters in the trunk that needed to get welded back on but I was not paying 150 bucks to get them welded back on some hacked up junk pipes that were under the car.150 was the quote I got plus come back in 3 days. Both cars have junk 7.5 peg leg rearends. So my plans are to upgrade to a vortec and a 8.8 rearend swap since all the 8.5 rears are too pricey.so I found a fox body t-bird race car with a bad sbc and th350. the th350 is fully built with a trans brake and 4300 convertor. I looked at car today and the convertor looked and smelled good only looks about10 inchs .also the rear I thought was a 8.8 turns out to be a 9 inch with some southside machine lift bars on it.the car comes with shifter new big radiator holley 750 and msd ignition box, weld draglights and drag raidials.the whole car for 1500 bucks!! some tri y headers and 3 inch exhaust with flowmasters and turndowns I plan on using too .so the regal I plan to use these parts on is a daily driver with very little freeway driving and on the freeway I only drive 60-65. my daily commute to work is about 20 minutes.i would like to race the car occasionally.the parts car also comes with a transcooler. so is this convertor WAY too big for my daily? gas mileage is of no concern a good 60 foot is.the engine will be stock vortec except the cam and valvesprings. I plan on using a new comp cam that I already bought for something else and never used. I don't know what the gear ratio is in the 9inch but I assume it is steep.if not I will swap to 410 or so.the cam is comp xr269hr-12 not real big at all also my other question is if the 9inch is mounted in the fox body should I plan the swap like its the 8.8? the car sits low so I could not see how its mounted I assume with stock mounts. Should I just buy a new convertor or try the one I'm getting with the transmission and see how it acts on the street?i know that gearing and the weight of the car and how much torque you are making effects how the stall flashes and behaves.i don't want the car to feel like the transmission is slipping bad under normal driving I know a little is to be expected thanks Winston

Welcome! Looks like your post made it into the right section. Sounds like you've got two nice rides there.
So the 9" you found is coming out of a fox body thunderbird? If so I'd assume that it is the same width as a foxbody 8.8 rear end.
Also here is a good article by Super Chevy that gives you the ins and outs of choosing a converter.

Use the money to buy a 9 inch that fits your car.
Trans brake transmissions, especially a TH350 is not really meant for street and traffic duty.

If you wanna race car, buy it and slap a motor in it (it is about 900-1000 pounds lighter than a G-body).

But, if you consider the price of a converter ($100-$300) and the price of a used 9 inch center with gears ($200-400) that would be on top of the price of the Fox Body T-bird. I am a G-body guy, through and through, but, I would get the Fox Body and build a motor and race it. Drive your G-body to work. Build a nice roller 350 or 383 and have fun with the cheap race car. Sounds like it would go 11s with a simple 350.

You can get a Quick Performance 9 inch housing and axles (get the 31 spline axles) for $745, cheapest and easiest route is to use the Camaro/Chevelle drum brakes on the back. You have $755 left for a center section, brakes, trans cooler, headers, a stall and a shift kit.

The lift bars will not help or work on your G-body cars. The headers are not going to fit your G-body cars. The exhaust is not going to fit.

A converter can smell good and still be bad, they have a sprag inside, which is a roller clutch, the inside part should only freewheel one direction.
