I have read about the case wear issues as well and the fluid opinions. I guess it would behoove me to take it apart and look for problems BEFORE I put it in a running vehicle. So what was the factory lube? 90 weight? Or ATF?
I've seen listings for both 90 and ATF. Not sure you necessarily need to tear it all the way down. If it's leaking at the front you'll probably be able to see the trail. I'd clean the front of the case where the cluster pin goes through and smear some RTV over it. Maybe replace the front seal too.
I'd probably toss it in and run it for the summer. If it's noisy or oozes oil -- that's what next winter is for.

Jim said it leaked but he felt it was the seal on the inside of the front bearing retainer. It is cracked at the back where the snout meets the flange so that would make sense. It is a hard piece to find so I thought I could just weld or braze it. I am not prepared to use this trans immediatly because I just rebuilt my Saginaw in the wagon. I was planning on putting this in my Firebird and that car is all apart for metal work.

I just thought I'd add this for archive purposes. Today I drove my El Camino to the dump and paid attention to gear splits. I made my shifts at 3000rpm.
1-2 dropped to 1800rpm
2-3 dropped to 1800rpm
3-4 dropped to 2100rpm
I've got 3.08 rear gears and according to GPS speedo I'm running 70 at 3000rpm in 3rd (direct). Sliding into 4th (overdrive) gives me a 2100rpm cruise at 70mph.
