The one on my '89 TTA went bad and they aren't $53, they are unobtanium.

I fixed it with a 1/2" 8-32 Screw, Nylock nut and a washer. Costs $1.18 to fix 8 cars @ Menards.

New guy. Scot. Previous G-body owner (3x 2-dr cars; 3x El Caminos). I have been on the MR forum for years but it's not very active & this forum seems to have more recent traffic so I signed up because of this thread.

I'm currently working on a low mileage mostly original '78 Malibu. Trying to get the broken/non functional items corrected & now focusing on the HVAC system. I replaced the plastic vacuum lines under the hood & have vacuum to the vent control valve. That being said, it doesn't work. With the a/c selected it blows through the defroster ports & @ the floor.

I was doing a search for the selector valve & found this info/thread. Looking @ the valve, I'm curious where exactly this 8/32 screw is supposed to be inserted to hold things together? Does anyone have a reference picture they could direct me to?

I also checked out the p/n's listed/cross-referenced within this thread & struck out. Both the online search functions for Advance & NAPA don't seem to like the p/n's listed here. I did find the AC Delco p/n & can get it from Summit but if the screw does the job then it moves me forward.

Any guidance is appreciated.

Just looked thru the order history from napa.. and they dont list the control valve anymore.. Nor does advance auto parts...

Looks like you're stuck with RockAuto at $57...

As far as the bolt/nut fix, I don't know... I wasn't tearing into it twice in case it didnt work.. and replacing it worked for me.

I have the control panel loose & was hoping the screw/lock-nut method would get me by. If it worked vs. sourcing a new part, I figured I would leave it @ that. Looking @ it, I can't really see where it would 'squarely' hold both sides for a better seal unless you drilled a hole through the center. I can order a new one from Summit (return/exchange ease). But they list it as over a week wait for it.

Thought I would see if anyone here might have a reference pic of how the screw keeps the two halves evenly clamped.

Sweet Malibu Scot! No experience with the screw fix, I bit the bullet and ordered the new control valve. Works like a charm now. Good luck!

I ordered one as well. Actually ordered 2 but the one from Summit still hasn't arrived 🙄

ACDelco 15-71389 WOW these must be getting real scarce, the price has double or better in a year. I suffered through heat on all summer last summer and won't do that again. I've found no other leaks in my system and am down to replacing this part. The price is steep for AC Delco piece of plastic 😱uch
