Who runs 350-400 psi? My high side pressure is 150psi. Low side is 30 to 40. Even R-134a will burn at 5 psi, at only 375*, not to mention the oils used in AC systems are flammable which is why the gasses are tested minus the oil. I can't imagine an explosion potential unless the entire system was released into the passenger compartment via the evaporator suffering a massive rupture and then somehow getting ignited. Since the evaporator is protected inside the heating/AC housing, how might that happen? A collision? I'm thinking a collision that would collapse that part of the firewall would be so bad that the AC leaking out is the least of your problems. Under the same circumstances the R-134a would suffocate you. I think the fire hazard is no worse than the usual fuel or electrical systems we take for granted. In fact I would be more afraid of a rubber fuel hose that was used instead of a steel line or spliced in glass fuel filter leaking and the fan blowing fuel all over the distributor.

Like I said before I wish you good luck with it.
I just hate the thought of people messing with this stuff and possibly causing a car to burn up,
or worse someone getting severely injured. :|

I appreciate the concern, but I'm not worried. Europe is already banning R-134a as it is not as safe nor efficient as it was touted to be. Notice how the cost is rising too, in anticipation of a US ban. The EU is leaning toward Hydrocarbon refrigerant, especially for commercial use. I'd think if there were documented incidents the worry-wart US Govt. would be all over it banning it's sale.

I was wondering why a can of 134a cost me so much this summer!

I am going to go home and try that running a hose of the condensor trick to see if that makes the air blow colder. It has not been a problem though recently because we have not had any 100 degree days in Chicago

p.s. Your new compressor is going out today. I got to the post office Monday and then realized I forgot to bring tape and the USPS wants like $1009.00 for a very short roll of Priority Mail tape, so I am just grabbing tape from work and going back later to send it. Stupid USPS!

Thats because GM was using smaller A/C Compressors in the late 70's/ early 80's to keep MPG's as high as possible and because of the space limitations.

What about the A/C compressor that came with the Serpentine belt system from GM performance? Was that one any better?

WOW! What morons in that PO. At mine we kept several rolls right on the counter, but it's only for Priority Mail. Otherwise we had rolls of brown tape and clear tape for PP. Just good customer relations. And that Priority mail tape is some stupid strong stuff. I've seen maintenance use it to repair equipment and it lasted for years!

To make matters worse they only had ONE working pen in the whole place and everyone was in line to use it to write addresses. Then some insanly large boobed black woman told me the package was too bloated to ship. Who was SHE calling BLOATED!?haha.

Yah I had some good packing/strapping tape that I used instead of the $4 a roll that is hardly enough to do one box. Came in 4 ounces over 20lbs but the lady took it anyhow. I bubble wrapped and stuck newspaper all around and taped the heck out of the box.

Great. I'll let my long suffering Carrier know to look out for it.

The compressor came today Anthony. It looks like a perfect match. Nice packing job! Thank's, man.

I was thinking..... when I bought my new Evaporator core I saw that AUtozone was selling one specifically for the Cutlass wagon, It was slightly bigger than the one in the notchback. Was there a bigger AC box on the wagon? And has anyone ever replaced the stock on on their Gbody with this bigger one? Or is the AC box the same on all and the Wagon evaporator just a snugger fit? Does the bigger size mean it cools better?

I was just looking at my 1980 service manual and it says that on a 100 degree day the left center outlet should get 46degrees at 36PSI at the accumulator. On an 80 degree day 34 degrees and 90 degree day 41 degrees.

What is the lowest anyone here has gotten with a converted system?
