I’m new here. I have a question. I have a 1985 Monte Carlo ss and I took out my AC box under my hood years ago and now I want my AC back. Can I just get another AC box and the compressor and install it and have AC again?

I dont see why not. Replace everything you took out. Condensor in front of the rad, evaporator in the HCAV box, drier on the fender and all your related lines. And of course the compressor

Ok. I was just curious because I took it to a classic car shop and they said they would install a vintage air system.

They told me it would cost more to go back original but yet , they quoted me $3,800 to install a vintage air system.

Wow, more than $3800? That seems high to me. I’d get another quote. Even if you took out the box, accumulator, compressor, condenser, etc I don’t see it costing that much for a shop that is familiar with the system.

vintage would be a plug and play system. Likely better quality than 40 year old tech and a quicker install for them. I am sure others will chime in. I have dumped a couple $k in to my non-currently functioning AC system

A good junk yard run would get you everything you need to get started for like 10% of that qoute. Even buying new replacement/repop parts will be cheaper.

do you still have everything behind the dash ? If not vintage would be the way to go. Just from the couple pics you posted you are missing all the HVAC box, likely all the ducting, and everything on the engine side of the things
