Thats it but you would save a lot by pulling one out of a car yourself. Maybe a member might even be able to hook you up with a good deal depending on your location
I’m going to look around at a pull a part. Thanks

Darn. I was hoping you would say Texas. I’m from Texas and have a lot of family around Texas. I also have family in Adrian Michigan.
Adrian is about 1-1/2 hours away from me.

I live in Baton Rouge. If you get a system installed, I can help you get it running. I have 134a, gauges, vacuum pump, etc.

A good friend just put aftermarket a/c on her no a/c from the factory 70 Chevelle. She bought an aftermarket a/c under dash system that actually installed under the dash. All that came through the firewall were the hi & low side hoses. Air came through her factory vents. She and her husband put it in at their house.

It works really well. I'm going to go that way with my 79 Malibu, although I'm going to have it installed. (I'm way to large to be wedging my big *ss under the dash.)
Let me know if you want some info.

I appreciate that. I saw the underdash system by vintage air as well. I’m just lost about what route is easier and more cost efficient.

I,m not sure this was Vintage Air. I'll try to contact her tomorrow and let you know where she got it.
I'll post her as soon as I get some info. I' also ask her what she paid for it.

A full blown Vintage Air system with heat and defrost is well north of a grand by itself. Add in a new compressor and condenser and retrofitting it to blow through factory vents and I don't think that original quote is all that outrageous.

Sure a junkyard system from another gbody is cheaper and easier to bolt back in, but there is no guarantee that it's going to work correctly right off the bat.

Even if it did, you'd still have the old technology running off vacuum to direct air around.

The Vintage Air systems use all the latest technology with electronic servos to direct airflow. They're designed to use and work efficiently on the latest refrigerants.

I'm not trying to sway you one direction or the other. I'm just sharing my experience with the VA system Installed in my non gbody 18 years ago and it still blows as cold as the day I first charged it up. The system fit entirely behind the dash with nothing hanging below. It also cleaned up the firewall on the engine side considerably.

Do yourself a favor and go with the Vintage Air system.
I installed one of their heat/defrost systems several years ago and it outperforms the stock system by a mile.
It blows more on low that the stock one did on high.
If you buy a used OEM setup, you are taking your chances.
Those old boxes get very brittle over time, and was said above, the Vintage Air system uses all new technology.

Thanks for the help. I’m waiting on another quote from a shop to install a vintage air system. So I’m going to see what he says .
