Yeah. I thought that quote was very high also. And I was thinking the same that it would be easier to go back the original way. I’m waiting to get another quote. Not sure if this next quote will be a vintage air install or back the original way.
 
I just did my entire AC myself. I removed everything except the box years ago. Bought all new parts and even had to rewire and it must have cost me less than $400 total including the 134 and compressor, manifold gauges etc., vacuum pump ...
 
I saw this AC box on eBay. Thinking about buying it but I wanted to be sure it’s what I need and that i can get AC going back this way

Thats it but you would save a lot by pulling one out of a car yourself. Maybe a member might even be able to hook you up with a good deal depending on your location
 
It's too bad, If you were closer I would give you a really good deal on the one in my 86" SS but it is not something I want to mess with as far as shipping.
Your local junkyard or someone parting out a car near you are probably your best bet.
