I went to the wrecking yard Thursday morning. I found a couple of G-bodies but nothing that I was really looking for until I came across this Lemans Wagon. It looked like it had the f41 package, but wasn’t sure if it had an alum core support. Does anyone know how you can tell if the core support is aluminum or not?

Here are a few pics;

Very true lol, next time i'll take a magnet with me. But is there any other way of telling it apart? like a parts number stamped on the actual core?

I just look for brown rust. Aluminum oxidizes white. It also sounds different when you tap it with a wrench. Aluminum sounds more "dull". I don't think that wagon has it though, it's a V6 car and would not need it for weight reasons. I also think it was used mostly on the earlier cars.

I dunno, I have never found one. It is a SUPER rare part and you never know where one might turn up. A car may have gotten one in a collision repair that never came with it, you just can't tell until you look. I think they are more prevalent in the 1978-81 cars, but I may be wrong. I also think they are more common in diesels as they would have needed the weight reduction more, but I am not certain. I do know that I got my aluminum hood off a diesel.

Aluminum core supports have a big "A" stamped in them on the passenger side right on top where you can see it.

I bought this one this summer and it will eventually find it's way onto my 442.

Now that's what im talking about, thanks Blake442. U saved me some time from having to carry a magnet around . Not that it's a problem, but more room to put stuff in my pockets lol :lol:

That quad headlamp header panel is probably worth something to someone. IIRC that was an '81 only option... even if its slightly cracked up, it could be repaired... just my .02! 😀
