Hope we have some knowledge here. I own a 1986 SS Aerocoupe that has been stored for years with only 46,000 miles. I know the history of this car since sold new at a local dealer. I have the title. The word "SPECIAL" is on the face in about 1 inch tall letters. 86 VIN / 86 title. From all that I have read, only 200 were produced in 86 for the NASCAR thing, mine being build in 7/86. They were all white. There is even a registry on other sites. Mine is 100% untouched right down to the hoses and belts. Here's the thing. this car is black, no repaint, and clearly a 1987 car. Stripes, tail lamps, the whole thing...87. Any information will surely help me sleep better

What state was it titled in? It wasn't uncommon 35 years ago for someone at the dmv to look at the manufacture date on the MSO and type that manufacture date for the model year.

What matters more than the year showing on the title is the vin being correct.

As long as you don't advertise and sell it as a 1986 all is well. If it really bothers you you can look into what the state needs for a corrected title to be issued - just the same as if the owners name was printed on.

Also, as an aside, back before auto makers got into that crazy summer launch of the next model year, the model year of your car WAS the year it was built.

Some companies (notably International) didn't HAVE "model years" and even printed advertisements to that effect. In those cases the dmv just assigned one based on manufacture date.

So, that may also explain things if a long time employee just put it through the way they used to...

I see it on late 70s into early is trucks here in Georgia all the time...

do you have the rpo sticker on the inside of the trunk? does it match?

you could also check with gm heritage center.

Thanks for the replies. Title is Georgia. The tenth digit in the VIN is "G" 1986 year model so there is no misprint from the state.

I went to GM heritage to confirm my 1980 olds 442 they only made 886 of them it did cost me 140 dollars Canadian but it did confirm that it was the real deal I have read a lot of the 86 Areo coupe but I do not any first hand information good luck in your endeavors Jeff from Winnipeg

The RPO sticker would solve many of these questions. In 86 the aero RPO code was B5T. In the 87 model year it was Z16. In the regular SS the sticker was under the trunk lid.

The 200 1986 aerocoupes were all white with burgundy interior. Some dealers in Florida had special paint schemes of red and white that they did after delivery.

None of the 86 aero cars had a posi rear end (G80).

The 86 cars had one trunk strut, 2 in the 87 cars.

I doubled checked this info on a aerocoupe registry plus some of the car mags from the time period.

Not sure what is going on with your car? Something is screwed up because it sounds like an 87 car with an 86 title.

Many others on the registry mentioned a difference in the back window construction between the 2 years, the way the carpet was laid out over the rear tray with the third light, and of course the rear bumper cover changes to name a few differences.

Here is link to a registry that might help:

Good luck in figuring out what is going on with the car.

Check for any more '87 features & details. How many RPO's are on the SPID tag? It could of been a not for public pre production/sample run/prototype '87 that made its way to the selling dealer (could explain the "Special".) GM does goof & lets one of these cars slip out by mistake (like the #1 & #2 '67 Firebirds that Gas Monkey restored.) With out ruining or braking anything, you might look for "Sample" markings on the '87 specific parts like around the rear window, each year had different ones & parts associated (I found this out years back when I got my '82-'90 Chevy parts catalog.) Like in my other post, the speedo could be another detail to back my idea if it's a 115 unit.

Yep, I'll check the SPID tag when I get off work. There is no doubt, the car has every identification of an 87 year model BUT it's definitely an 86. I agree also that GM has let prototypes slip out and kinda hoping this is what I have. I didn't mention that I am the Service Director for a Chevy dealership and have been for 27 years. I've collected a lot of contacts over the years and a few are looking into this for me. Unfortunately archives were only stored on Cadillac. Hell, I even know the dealer personally that sold it new, but I'm sure he won't remember.

You could be surprised. I had a '72 Monte that still had a build sheet in good enough condition that I found out the selling dealer ship (Batey Chevy, Carnegie Pa, long closed.) I ended up working there in '97 & after getting settled in after a few weeks I asked the owner if he had any info still on hand about it. He said all that was dumped back in the '80's, but after describing how it was ordered he did remember it. It was a show room car, he said thats how he ordered them back then.
