I bet that title got your attention!
The Air Force has always used high performance "chase cars" to help land the U2 spy plane. They used to use 68-69 SS 396 El Caminos, which were fast enough to quickly accelerate as the U2 lands 100+mph down the runway. Eventually they switched over to 80's G-body Elkies. There isn't much info on these cars but I've read they put 396's into them! Just guessing they realized the 305 2bbls didn't have enough balls and had some fresh left over 396's laying around in case the older Elkies blew a motor (they obviously beat on these cars day in and day out).
It's all speculation on my part but curious what you guys think. Do you think those air force mechanics dropped a 396 into G-bodies without changing the trans or rear end? The replacement for the G-body Elkies were 5.0 Mustangs. Odd thing; they say the 5.0 Mustangs killed the Elkies... I'd think a G-body Elky with a big block 396 would be at least as fast even with highway gears.
