k that was a good thread. lots of information. I feel like I'm getting a better understanding. Also here is probably a ridiculous question but, is it possible to hook up a mass air flow sensor, purely for CFM measurement to an olds 350? I'm thinking that from that data you can back out what the volumetric efficiency is of your engine to help tune the carb even further? This may be an unnecessary step or some sort of circular never ending loop but worth a shot.
 
The thing to remember is that it is very rare for a N/A street small block V8 to come close to 100% VE. It is likely nearer to 70-85% at it's peak unless you have done work with ram tuning, etc.

As for a MAF, you may be able to hook one up. It runs a 5 volt reference signal and returns a portion of that signal with a max of 5 volts when the meter is maxed out. You would need a pretty large meter to do this accurately or else it will become a flow restriction and throw off your calculations. Then again, you have more than one variable at work here too, so it will take some work to figure out the optimal way of going about it.

actually it's a very good idea. with a MAF and a good wideband O2 you will have an excellent idea of what the engine is doing. that's why the oem's use them. a MAP is also a good diagnostic/load sensing tool. unfortunately it's not worth it on a carb as you don't have the super-fine tuning ability of EFI. the car magazines have tested carbs vs EFI to destruction and a properly tuned carb (using the standard methods of a vacuum gauge and A/F sensor) has just as much power as EFI but only at that temp/humidity/altitude. but they never varied very much. you don't have to be dead perfect.
