So last night I may have got the steal of the year already. I picked up an 80k mile virgin complete running driving 1970 Buick 455 and BOP TH400 long tail transmission for $100. The dude was gonna scrap it so he told me to make an offer. I threw $100 out and he took it right away so I could've got it cheaper im sure. No ridge at all at the top of the cylinders. Has some weird *ss flat top pistons with a nipple looking thing in the center. Never seen it before.

Casting number for the block is 1231738 and the heads are 1231786. Can anyone tell me what exactly I have here? I know after 72(?) they went down in compression and weren't as desirable. Any and all info is appreciated.

Wow!! That's a great score. You might want to pose that question on the V8 Buick site.http://www.v8buick.com/
There's a lot of knowledgeable Buick guys there. I'm sure they'll be able to answer your question.

look up regalbegal he knows a lot about buick 455 engines

Great score. If all you are wanting is a stock engine it will be fine as is. If you have any intentions of building it up any visit v8buick.com before you do or buy anything. You cannot build a buick 455 like any other engine or it will blow up in your face. These engines are a breed of their own and require special needs in certain areas of the build.

OK first off Congrats on a great steal! What you have is a 72-76 block & 72-74 heads. Looking at the exhaust ports, the left most port should have a 2 digit year cast in. IE: mine have "73", those are 71cc, excellent for a street motor. Now dont go thinking it's low compression junk, Buick is different than Chevy, comperssion is changed by which pistons are used, there are no flat tops these are dished pistons (with the dimple in the center). the volume of the dish is whats important, you probably have a 25cc dish. that should bring you to about 8.5:1. Even stock, the 455 will make globs of torque. they're rated at 510 ft/lbs @ 2800 rpm. I could go on at length here, so if you need more specifics just ask. 455'ed80Regal is very right about how these have to be built.

Im still not sure what I wanna do with it. The guy told me it was an Olds 455 so I bought for my dad as a back up in case his ever blows up. I don't have anything to put it in nor do I see myself taking on another project at the moment. I might throw it on craigslist and see what I can get for it.

You sure about the years? I ran the numbers and found 70-71 block and 70 heads. I suppose that site could be wrong. Im new to Buicks.

Not finding any casting numbers or stamps on the heads near the exhaust ports. I'll get some pics.

Heres the heads. No numbers near the exhaust ports that I can see.
