7a heads are like the devil crapping in your cornflakes. There is absolutely no help for these heads. I have 50 bucks and wanna make my next step to a faster olds. any help?
The first thing I would do for that car is get a decent set of gears. Something like the 3.23's that were optional on the high altitude V6's will give you a ton more torque at the wheels off the line, but not be so buzzy as to make the car unlivable either. For your $50 price range, you are not going to be able to change the heads, but you may be able to find a complete rear axle assembly. The codes you need to look for are in the knowledge base forum in the SPID sticky. The SPID is the label on the underside of the trunk lid and contains all sorts of valuable information on the original equipment specific to your car.
On a personal note, my car has a swapped in 355 Chevy, yet with the 2.41's it still wasn't really all that quick. The switch to 3.23's made the car a different animal and vastly improved both acceleration and around town fuel economy. How much better? The car with the v8 is actually better on gas around town than the v6. (It is even surprisingly close to my 4 cylinder manual trans truck when delivering pizza!) Your results will vary because you have less than half the horsepower and torque of my car, but you should still see the best bang for the buck improvement with the gears.
It's easiest to just get the complete rear end. If you have never done a gear swap before, it would be better to find someone that has the experience and tools to help you get them in. If you decide to get the complete rear end, V6 cars tend to have a higher ratio, I believe mine has a 3.08, and the performance G bodys usually had a higher ratio. I believe Monte SS had 3.73.
Yeah 4 barrel q jet with modded secondaries that open at a full 90' degrees. That's the one saving grace about the olds 307 is that they all came with 4 barrel q jets
Swap the rear for one with better gears. Headers that will work for a future Olds 350/403 and maybe a shot a spray that can be carried forward to the next engine otherwise your money is better spent somewhere other than modifying your 307.
If you can't find a rear axle for around $50, you don't know where to look. That is all I paid for mine about 3 years back, and I could go to the yards I frequent today and find a similar deal (I use 4 different ones.). You need to go shop at the self serve yards that base prices on the type of part rather than what it came out of. Part of this hobby is knowing how and where to shop for the best deals. If you fail to do so, you will end up spending way too much. Much like with tools, the best deals go to the intelligent consumer.
