The problem with them is they are too big and no one knows anything about cars there. They only know what it says in the book...Not all cars and parts interchange, but if it says so in the book that is what they will give you. Just my experience.

I dont know about you but it seems this is an issue wherever you go. People dont think with their heads anymore, nowhere

We get used engines from them at work. Really haven't had an issue and I've put one in personally and didn't run into anything odd. The prices may seem a little high but at least you know exactly what you are getting.

I think he has Keystone mixed with the cheap chinese sheet metal you buy on eBay

I was scrolling through eBay and ran across a seller by the name of surplusautopartsandmachinery which is a division of LKQ.They have some decent deals on longblocks. I was wondering if anyone heard of this company.

We own ATK engine company. Chances are this is an ATK product.

That is US Autoparts, AKA Autoparts Warehouse and JC whitney and a bunch of others, they choose to flood the market with cheap grade lesser gauge and non galv sheetmetal.

Yes, I work in a collision shop, no I have never worked in a dealership.

CAPA....you've GOT to be kidding.

Some aftermarket sheetmetal will pass, most will not. Gauge, hardness, crispness, edge forming generally do not compare to OEM...in my experience. Hoods almost always have HIGHLY visible mastic pad telegraphing and wavy hemming.

Yes, it's good for pricing

Yes, OEs are sourcing overseas. I have no beef with Chinese made parts, just the ones that are made for the bottom-feeders in the (repair) industry solely concerned with price. I know the Chinese can produce quality, when the customer is willing to pay for it.

We actually buy from LKQ...it's Keystone that isn't doing much for us. To say a Keystone aftermarket chrome bar is OE quality is an outright lie. Rechromes...couldn't tell you, we no longer buy rechromes since neither Keystone or DalChrome could supply a quality part on the first try over a long period. Terrible luck with remanufactured covers, we can either not get them (yesterday it was 2011 Subaru Impreza rear) or they're aftermarket rather than remans.

Sorry, for me, time is money, and I only get one shot at each day.

Have YOU ever worked the line? Just curious.

I understand you feel that you're doing a service for people, and you are, but to say it's OEM production quality is not what I've seen.

I would be curious to see what the '99-02 Chevy truck fenders are like, the OEs are junk...cannot make a decent hood gap with what's currently being supplied.

We seldom return OEM sheetmetal for fitment...our biggest problem is transit damage. Our aftermarket sheetmetal return rate is non-existant because we seldom buy any, unless it's for a GEICO or Progressive insured.

I'm sure the aftermarket crash parts business will continue to improve, just as the import automobiles did over time, it just has a ways to go...and frankly, with SOME of the OEM service parts being supplied, the gap appears to be closing. Improvement is inevitable, especially as the OEs pare their service parts operations more and more. Many will have to look to the aftermarket to service an aging domestic fleet. There are junky OE parts, and there are junky aftermarket parts, I believe that people with the hands on experience will tell you that at this point the OE part has the advantage./size]

The preceding is my opinion, right or wrong. And for the record, I am an honest bodyman...I take pride in my work, do not take shortcuts, and am trying to mentor the young tech in our shop to avoid developing the "just get it out" attitude that seems prevelant in many techs in the industry.

Certifit (sortafit) and New World International (are they even in business any more?) are the prime offenders here.

Seems like most of the sheetmetal is Gordon...Tong Yang and DEPO for lamps...at least what gets delivered to us.

Can't say who the other guys are using, never buy from them.

LKQ

I didn't mean to flame your employer! We had a nice, mom and pop style U Pull It west of Daytona Beach. They were bought out by LKQ and immediately doubled the prices on everything (literally double).

When I went looking for my engine swap I found engines via LKQ but they wanted $350 for a core charge. I ended up finding another mom and pop type-place and they threw in all the accessories, wiring harness, intake, no core charge, lower price and NO TAX!

Understood. We are a public company that makes money and in turn the public invests money and in turn that person makes money. Many smaller companies will make practices such as selling with their heart rather than with their head and in turn they lose profit and cannot pay the bills. Many companies run in the red like this. This is not good for any economy. We have a rule as product managers. Make sure our vendors remain healthy and make money so they can in turn make additional products for us. Many general public needs to take this same philosophy, if they can afford to, and get our economy back on track. The constant beating people up for the cheapest price is not always the best position to take. It makes market erosion where no one makes any money to remain competitive. We LKQ have the advantage of being a large company that has cornered the market through smart aquisitions and smart profit making business decisions.

And LKQ does offer half price days at least once a month and last for usually 3-4 days. I always plan on buying my stuff during those days.

I even applied for a job at our local yard last week, unfortunately I don't speak Spanish so they cant find a place for me.

Thanks for all the useful info guys. I plan to purchase a remanufactured longblock from them. I'll keep you posted
