I plan on going small block chevy down the road, but right now, I'd like to get rid of the dual mufflers before the axle and get a crossflow system. Has anyone done this or know of one that will fit? I will probably have the pipe from the cat to the muffler custom made, just looking for something that sits right. Anyone got any ideas?

Diesel cutlasses had a single in using the stock cat to muffler pipe then exit on both sides. The tailpipes will likely need to be custom made.

GN's had a 2 in 2 out muffler that fit in the cavity in front of the rear wheels

I think you meant behind the rear wheels correct? That is kinda what I am going after is one that fits like the GN so I can get rid of any mufflers in front of the axle for clearance issues.

Good point. I forgot about that. When I put a 400 SBC in my RWD Buick Century 25 years ago, that was the setup I used. Combined with a eliminator pipe in place of the cat, it looked decent and sounded a bit better than stock. I never did get around to a true dual setup, as there were no aftermarket trans crossmembers available then.

Is there any special brackets needed for this?

Are you staying with duals after the single cat, dual cats? If single exhaust, the 78-80 cutlass had the muffler mounted that way. If going duals, look at camaro mufflers, they mount vertically, behind the rearend also, but have dual in/out.
