It's a legitimate question. Is the Georgian situation, as well as the one in Poland, the beginning of a new Cold War with Russia? Putin is, after all, a former member of the "Committee for State Security", aka the KGB. Are we about to see another Cuban Missile Crisis ( The one in 1962 had similar causality, but I forget where our Ajax missiles were stationed)? It is also interesting to note that a major oil and natural gas pipeline runs through Georgia to Europe, and Russia controls the other one. Is Russia trying to take control of European energy supplies in order to blackmail the west into doing it's bidding? Communism may be dead in Russia, but that does not mean an end to despotism. I don't pretend to know enough to answer this, but I figured we have not had a good controversy here in a few weeks, so why not?

Well

the other day I just about told my brother off when he was flipping out through the house saying the very same thing. The guy has no sense of intellligence when it comes to these sorts of questions but yet buy watching the bias *ss news thinks he knows the full story. 3 things, first of all no I do not believe we are going in that direction because for one Russian is no where near as powerful as they once were, that is one of the main reasons they are going and taking back countries etc, they once had they want to try to and retake power, something they are not going to do because they will be fighting the world this time. 2ndly They may own a large ammount of the gas and oil lines, but again they are not going to be able to just screw over all of Europe. They will have a lot of very angry euros. Lastly My brother was explaining well they have ties with China and there big 1,000,000 plus army. Yeah well so we have ties with all the European nations and other continents for that matter. Russian forces dont have the balls to keep up what they were doing. They are not like Arabian forces who fight little battles day in and day out. I could go on like this for a good hour or 2 stating reasons, thats why I am going into history and hope to work in the government in a couple of more years. First comes the bachelors and then the masters haha. 😀

but the original question was "are we getting into another COLD war". will we get into an actual war with russia? highly doubtful, neither one of us wants to push things that far, especially when we still have thousands of ICBM's and long range bombers.
a cold war however? very likely. russia is doing what she's done many times before, find a way to make someone attack or insult you then invade. drive deep and then accept a "diplomatic solution" that gives you a big chunk of territory. then you use threats and influence (and quiet insurgents/revolutionariess) to make the country "decide" that they want to be part of the russian empire. and russia LOVES their border states.
i think the real question is, what will happen with poland? i don't see the poles backing down and i see them making a real push to be part of NATO and getting in on the missle defense shield. depending on their actual influence in the ukraine and belarus they may get really paranoid (even for russia-and sometimes i think they invented paranoia)

The thing is, Poland is already a part of NATO. I know Georgia was trying to become a part of NATO, but France and Germany were holdouts and did not want to admit them. Ukraine is already a member, as are I think the Balkans and maybe a few other republics that came from the breakup of the Soviet Union. So, if Putin tries to reacquire territory lost due to the breakup of the USSR, it could result in WWIII. Is Putin that stupid? Hopefully not. He is, however, trying to begin a new set of alliances with our enemies, sort of like a new kind of Warsaw Pact.

Another thing is that Putin HATES Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, and tried to have him assassinated during his election. He threatened Georgia to try to get them to remove him from power because he was seen as being more Pro-Western and not a puppet of Moscow.

lol

daffy your an idiot, I dont care about puncuation on this website neither do others. Case closed. Cutless and other read about the history of Poland. Its quite interesting really, they have been taken over by countries there entire life. It was Napoleon Bonaparte of the great French who unified them into a country in 1809 I believe it was. I could see Poland being taken back by someone again, its happened before why not again. Ill say it again, Russia has no where near the cultural, physical influence that they once had. Communism is dead you guys. The Communism that Chinas government is a hybrid of the old ways, thats why it works. Please dont get me going on that subject, their communism is different though. I dont see a Cold War happening on either side because both nations U.S. and Russia both know that the rest of the world is not going to deal with them if we fire upon ourselves. Just look at the example of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. ahah god when people heard that including me it was get over there beat their asses and stomp them to hell. We can not have that. Thats why I voted for Pres. Bush the 2nd time. Now before someone can even call me a Jew prick im a Ron Paul guy this time around but I guess im one of his few supporters. And as I was saying before, both of our nations are not going to go into a Cold War and neither are others. Tell me who the hell has fired these Nuclear bombs on other countries yet, noone had because it would break all the treaties made after WWII and that would be very bad, as I said before the country that does so had better be ready for the rest of the world to take them out. Noone is going to fire the first bullet. It never happened in the 80s its not going to happen now. Thats my 2 cents. If people dont believe me I suggest getting out those books and start reading them. Watch the news too.

So, 1986montecarlols, you basically do believe in the possibility of a Cold War with the Russians. By definition, it is a war of politics, espionage and strategy, and is not fought on a battlefield. That would be a hot war. Did the last cold war ever go hot? Yes it did in theaters like Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, etc., but neither side DIRECTLY fought the other in combat, they fought the other by proxy. Neither side formally declared war on the other, but the opposite side of a given conflict would use others to carry out it's wishes by supplying the war materiale to combatants facing their foe. The Russians did it with the Viet Cong, and the US did it with the Mujahadin. Neither side ever killed the other's fighters "Officially", although it is widely known that Russian pilots flew sorties in MIG 15's vs American Saber jets over the skies of Korea.
