well i got new tires put on the back of my elky and the dood found that my drive shaft where it connects to the rear housing is loose. and now i know where this whining is coming from when i let off the gas. ****! anyone have any suggestions on what i can do to fix this and if possible if i can find the parts i need at a junk yard? thanx fer yer help!

sounds to me like a u-joint problem. DONT buy one from a junkyard, its not worth it...they run somewhere around 20 bucks i think. relatively easy to change too. even if you have to have someone do it it should cost under 100 bucks. its not a major job.

thats not it

the u joints are fine, where the housing meets the u joints, i guess its the pinion shaft? well thats loose. what evers between the u joints and the housing jiggles when i grab it and it wines when i let off the gas i can feel it in the floor, so im not gonna drive it to avoid beating the crud juice outa the underbody. so whats that called and how do i fix it? thanx for any help!

Might be the pinion bearing. It presses on the pinion shaft and you have to dismantle the rear to change it then get the gears reshimmed...its a big deal.. Chances are the ring gear is already damaged too so I would plan on replacing the whole carrier or swapping out the whole rearend.

well its eather the pinion bearing and seal or im just retarded. please some one tell me one or the other!

you only diagnose to a certain extent over the internet. without seeing it it's almost impossible to tell 😉

We swap rear ends all the time and never have any problems. Just put it all back like you found it. If you see that it is a bad bearing, make sure you take your old bearing with you to purchase the new one. I have found three different sized pinion bearings in metric housings. The pinion seal is replaced from outside the housing, but it would cause a leak not a vibration.

It is most likely the bearing, but if your going to have someone else do it you'd be better off setting up the whole rearend. Look at it as your chance to swap in some lower gears!

well when it stops raining here ill see if i can get a video of it. btw how would i go about posting that here?
