I have a chance to get a 1976 chevy 350 out of an Impala. The guy said it has a blown head gasket. The engine used to run strong because I know the car it came out of. I was just wondering do I have to take the block to the machine shop. Can I just hone the cylinders a install a reduild kit. This will be my first rebuild. I want to add aftermarket intake and carb.

Can't answer those questions until u see the inside of the engine. SBCs r pretty stout, so heads (if cast iron) are prob OK. Gotta look at the cylinder walls and if there is a lip at the top. Measuring is the best way of finding out. Especially if swapping a new piston in.
