I have 2 85 olds 442 and both have the fangs on bottom side of the housing does this mean they are 7.5 rears or what?
i know one of the cars is a true 442 by the 8th digit in the vin being a 9
only 62k miles on it the car has been sitting for 6 years.this car will be for sale.

I know back when I was researching for an alternative rear end for my 7.5 rear end, I read the two fangs indicate that the rear is a 7.625 rear end which were typically found in monte carlos. My 7.625 rear end that I put in my malibu is from an 86 monte carlo ss and it has the two fangs.

...I've read some of the 442s didn't get 8.5s.

All '85-'87 442's recieved 8.5" rears, as well as the '84 Hurst/Olds.
However, the '83 Hurst/Olds was built with the 7.5".

All Olds 8.5's had 3.73's, whereas the Buicks all had 3.42's.

You have a Monte with a 7.5, just compare it with the Old's. If they look the same, you have a 7.5, if not the Old's is something else.
