The '79 malibu I just got has the teeth completely gone on the window mechanism. How hard is it to replace this? Are all g body cars the same when it comes to this mechanism? I thought I may go roam the salvage in search of a good one.
Is it something that can be purchased new?

I'll assume you are talking about the teeth on the actual crank pin that the handle attaches to....
I believe you will need to change out the regulator which measures about 4x10" and is orientated vertically in the door. Four rivets hold it on.
As far as how hard is it to do-that depends on your mechanical aptitude I suppose. Drill out rivets, replace unit and either re-rivet or bolt it in...
I think all manual regulators are about the same, I'm not 100% but it seems it's one of those items that got used a lot across the various models.
May find someone on the forum with a set they will part with, I don't know if it's available new.
Hopefully some more knowledgeable guys with chime in with some more concrete info for you ....

Edit: Did a quick search and it looks like the regulator includes the entire scissor mechanism as the lower attachment is a solid connection that isn't really serviceable......makes things a bit more involved but certainly still doable......
What you are looking for is a 'manual window regulator' for 79 Malibu
