BIG cam for a 305HO

I know this will sound like a broken record . . . but, WHY would you want to do any performance upgrades to a 305 ? I would find a 350 on Craigslist before I would ever think about performance in a 305. I know that some of the cams available can SOUND real cool, but will do little in terms of performance in a 305.

As for an answer to your question . . . I believe a 305 is compatible with all Small Block Chevy cams. According to Summit, there are 305 cams as big as .551/.551 with 276/276 duration. As long as you check piston to valve clearances, you can go as big as you want. Bigger cams may require valve reliefs in the pistons.

The big issue with running larger cams in a 305 is that the combustion chambers in the heads are really small compared to the larger ones used in the 350's. Most of them came with 64-58cc chambers. This means that there is VERY little piston-to-valve clearance that will allow you to use larger cams.

Well..... basically its my daily driver. I have a good 350 sitting in my garage but needs pushrods , lifters , and rockers to get running again. Stripped the heads off it so that all got scrapped. But my plan has changed for the engine. I am planning on putting a BBC in the car now so I was just gonna throw a cam in the 305 to give it some rump in the exhaust. Like i said itsmy dail driver and Iwant to spend the money on suspention , and drivetrain upgrades before I put a BBC in between the framerails. I might put the 350 in for the heck of it next year but for now a cam in the 305, and true duals will keep me happy. Just picked up a hardly used gas tank and headers for $80 so hoping to do the exhaust in Jan. I am planning on changing the thermostat and coolant next weekend so thought that might be a good time to do a cam too. I just want a lil rump, with good vacuum and drivability. Any suggestions on numbers?

Flip a few of the plug wires around to get the thump much cheaper and will probably net more HP gain than tossing a "big" cam in a 305

If you're looking for cheap...go with the Summit 1103 $52.95

What do you have in it now? I've got the cam out of my L69 that I could sell ya cheap. It's the L81 Corvette cam. PM me if interested.

Edit:::: just read your post again and realized you already have the HO 305. At any rate, I'm rebuilding mine as well and it ultimately came down to the Summit I mentioned above or the Lunati 60101. I went with the Lunati since I found a good deal (was still about $140 with lifters).

X2 on the cheep summit cams but you are going to need more then just cam and lifters. You are going to need the proper valve springs togo with the cam the stock spring just don't work that good.

what gears do you have on the monte ? if the original 3:73 ,

for just a little more pep id go around .480 lift , 210 dur @.050 on a 108 lsa .... still fun no headaches ...
