a beer vending machine in the barracks

I bet that thing was a goldmine for someone, at least it would've been in our barracks! I think I've only seen a handful of beer vending machines because they were becoming far and few at my age. The last one I saw was on a navy base in Alameda, CA in like '94 or so. Drinking before we got to the bar or wherever was known as "pre-flighting".

as civilians we knew that as getting primed...we use to hit the tavern for 25 cent drafts and then head for downtown to go beaver hunting

"I bet that thing was a goldmine for someone" Actually the poor guy that had to service that machine was always griping about how he had to fill it twice as often as any other machine and it was always EMPTY. But when I was in Germany there was a small brewery right down the road that made Grunner beer. The guys had a small dorm-size fridge in our room and kept it filled with those ceramic top reusable bottles of Grunner and it worked out to a quarter a bottle which you tossed into a coffee can on top. They had the same complaint- after I arrived they had to refill the fridge too often!

I would commend you on making sure the supply of beer was always fresh..I'm impressed at the sacrifices you made to make sure your brothers always had fresh beer to consume.

Yes, it's a thankless job, but I do my best.
