I just bought a 305 w/transmission
Out of an 87 Monte Carlo . What should I be looking for when taking it apart. Like potential issues.
Here are some pics

do you know if it ran before it was removed from the car it was in and what are your plans for it? If you are going to rebuild it you can rebuild a 350 for about the same money and you'll get more out of it.

How do the plugs look? Does it look clean inside (under valve covers)? If you have a bore scope or if you pull the heads does it have a ridge at the top of the cylinders? How does the oil look? You could check compression before you tear into it. If you tear into it you could inspect/plastigauge the bearings.

The person i purchased it from said it was from a running 87 Monte Carlo , the transmission was supposedly rebuilt with less than 100 miles on it.

That engine isn't an 87, a 87 would have center bolt valve covers and a remote coil HEI.

i haven't got to taking apart the engine yet, but from a quick look around I saw no cracks, the oil looked decent wasn't black. I don't have the tools to test compression ( that I know of ) I was planning on replacing a portion of the components piston ring, plugs etc ( things like that)

that transmission doesn't look like it's been removed from the engine or opened up.

How many miles does it supposedly have?

If you can get the casting numbers (on the driver's side of the engine block at the rear, behind the cylinder head), and/or the stamping number (on a machined pad at the front of the block deck surface on the passenger's side, just in front of the cylinder head), then you should be able to at least get a rough idea of exactly what you've got.
