Wellston, OK
Has anybody used the Motive pressure bleeders? As hard as the rear cylinders are to get to, I'm thinking pressure bleeding is the best bet....the old pump and bleed didn't work well this time around, and the mityvac was a trainwreck. I usually just gravity bleed, but the rears didn't seem to want to bleed that way, so my next stop was pressure bleeding.

I have not used that one. I used to use a commercial pressure bleeder. It was even more messy than pump-and-bleed, and used a LOT of fluid. I went back to that simple way but having a not-brain-dead helper as pumper is key.

You mean tripped? A line would need to be open for that to happen. I am suspicious of the Mityvac method because vacuum can cause bubbles. That is why we vacuum down AC systems- to vaporize the moisture. Gravity is OK if the master cylinder cap is off. That button on the proportioning valve that is supposed to be pressed to open the rear line has never worked for me. I believe it de-pressurises the residual pressure valve? They are always quite open on my cars.

I used the Motive last month. The rubber lined aluminum lid needs to be tight on the master. It worked real nice. I even went around the car twice. The directions say to put 2 quarts in the pumper, if your system is full you shouldn’t need to use that much fluid. I’m sold and invested (around $60.00) in this system.

hanks.... 🙂

I use the bleeder all the time, works good. Make sure the square adapter for the master is the updated one made of aluminum. I have the original one made of plastic and it deforms when clamping it to the master and leaks if not put on exact. Other than that great for 1 man brake bleeding.

I have one with the aluminum plate and it worked great after I ditched the chains that came with it and used 2 big c clamps to hold it to the master cylinder. It is very close on size though and wish the plate was just a bit bigger. Couldn't get about 7-8 psi in it without leaking between the plate and new Delco master cylinder reservoir. Just a heads up.

When I started working on my 81 I bought one of those. Figured it would make life easier. The first and only time I used it the seal on the master wasnt right and brake fluid went all over my frame and garage floor. That was when I made the mistake of using the silicon brake fluid so in a way I was lucky and it didnt damage the fresh paint. I wound up giving the thing to one of my friends. I would never own another one.
That being said the second time I tried to use a bleeder one of my friends that has a shop lent me one of these. Its made by MightyVac. I gotta say it was great ! I bled both cars with this and it made it really easy. If I was going to do a few more cars I would buy one for myself but I dont think I'll have a use for it again any time soon.
As far as the proportioning valve tripping go on ebay and buy one of those plastic tools with the pin that screws into the valve and stops the shaft from moving. I also bought one of them and it actually works.

As I said, the aluminum/rubber lined plate on my Motive brand was more than big enogh and didn’t leak at all at 12-15 psi which is what all the videos I watched suggested.
