Broken ignition

I was able to make time saturday and get out on the car and tear the column down. Old ignition out i pop in the new one and turn it over to see if i have the same issue and just my luck i do. That was as far as i've got this weekend spent the rest of my time reading trying to figure out whats the issue. So from what i've gathered after my searching is the rack that rides the plastic gear is where my problem lies. But from the point where i'm at now would i just need to remove these last 3 bolts drop the column and completely disconnect the turn signal harness and pop the column cover off and realign the rack and gear? I'm in the dark guys not sure if i'm going about this right.

Are you sure the ignition switch is OK? I mean the one down the column that actually starts the car. When you turn the key switch, the sector gear pushes the ignition switch rod which actuates the ignition switch. By dropping the column a bit you can see what's going on down there when you turn the key.

Is this what your speaking of "ignition switch"? Would that cause the key to just turn and no spring back when in the start position? And the car is stuck in ACC position. Those were the reasons i figured the actuator rack.

Yes, that's it. And the spring is inside that pushes back in "start" position. Once on my Dad's car the spring broke through the back side and it stayed in "start" unless you physically moved the key back to "run". Can you tell if the actuator rod is moving when you turn the key? If not you maybe have a sector gear problem too.

well had the same prob on my sisters ride, the key would get stuck,i pull the old one out installed the new one,and same thing,so i dropped the column to see if the rod to the switch was working and it was, i went to the local junk yard and got the gears behind the key switch, installed them and the key switch low and behold problem was solved, not sure if it is your problem but it fixed hers. you should be able to use a screw driver and see if everything works while you have the key switch out. good luck

Well i put my column back together and dropped it in order to get to the ignition switch mentioned above. Before i pulled it i did notice that when i turn the rod did move and cycle the switch. But it was jumping teeth when it got to the point where it would press on the spring. Once i pulled the switch it still sprung back and cycle through all its points fine( i got a new one anyways). But with the switch removed i cycled the ignition lock cylinder and confirmed its jumping teeth. So does that rule out any other possibilities?

Yes, I think you have zeroed in on the culprit. I read that the sector gear repair kit is getting hard to find but they are out there made by Dorman and others. Pay attention to how it comes apart because it is a little confusing to re-assemble.
