So my original plan was to build a 383. But plans have changed. My new plan is to build a budget 355 with the hp expectantcy of 400+ hp and 375+lb of torque.

Ive been reading on this and it can be done for less than 4,000 or less.
Does any one have any ideas or builds that meet these goals for a good budget?

I ve already tore down a block and am about to get it bored and hot tanked friday. Can I use the stock crank ?

a nice roller cam and vortec heads, headers and duels ...and for around 400 hp a stock crank is fine

Port and polish the heads ? What all do I need to do to install a roller cam in a non roller bock? Cam size for nice streetable car that would be up to the task of the 400 ponies?

Running a roller cam in a non OE roller block requires a retrofit kit. Check out summit racing or similar store and you will see what I mean. They are pricey.

If not a roller cam, what size hydraulic cam can I go with without a extremly rough idle and with good vaccum?

Hey Check Out Lunati Voodoo 60103 Cam. I will be using it for my SBC 355 And Have Heard Only Good News About It!

You need to know your compression ratio, rear gear, stall speed or if it is stock that is fine and what you are gonna do with it, what type of driving, carb size, intake, headers. All this stuff is needed to make a good cam recommendation. When you know all this call the cam manufacturers all of them have cam help lines you call and they will help you select a cam based on your needs. Be honest with yourself with what your doing with this engine and what you have to reach your goals. You do not want to undercam or overcam an engine.

YOu could get a stroker kit for about a grand from Powerhouse, they were featured in super chevy a while back....400 HP isn't all that hard to get .....Get a decent short block and for the top end go with the edelbrock performer rpm air gap intake, performer rpm cam and lifter kit (488/510 lift) and a decent set of heads, like the performer rpm heads and better yet the dart pro-1 aluminum heads....Good luck with your build and keep us posted 8)

comp cams 280h port and polish or the vortec. 1.6 ratio roller rockers. full length headers and duals a good carburator. better ignition, either a performer rpm, or an rpm air gap manifold. really cylinder heads an camshaft r what makes the power unless you r gonna go crazy on compression. or for like $500 throw on some nitrous
