You dont have to do the retainer on the vortecs. Comp makes some Beehive springs that you can use with up to .550 lift, only using the springs, if you dont want to cut anything.

Ill be getting those for sure.Going on the hunt for the heads tomorrow.

So did you decide on vortecs or going another route. If you go vortec your best bet is to get them new for less than 700 assembled pair. Buying used ones could be a crapshoot, may end up putting that much into them if they need rebuilt. Goodluck and I hope you enjoy your project.

I built a 355 for a guy 3 yrs ago that consisted of a GM block .030 over, stock crank, 5.7" rods, flattop pistons.
Then threw on a set of vortec heads from Scoggin Dickeys set up and already machined for more lift with .600 lift springs. I also used a Comp Cams XR276HR hydraulic roller shaft with a set of 1.6 roller rockers, and Edelbrock RPM AirGap with a 750 Holley Vac Secondary carb. The idle was noticable to slightly choppy and with a set of 1 3/4" headers made around 420 hp and 415-420 torque on the dyno if I remember right. It was a great little street performer with a 2500 converter, 2004R trans 4.10 gears in a '80 Malibu. Best of all I think he spent around $3000-$3500 for the engine build including the block machining. So it can easily be done on a small budget and be very streetable. Good luck and have fun on your build.

Going vortec. Scoggins or gm performance. Thanks all for all the input. I will use this as my reference for my build

Re: building small block Update!!

Just got back from the junkyard and bought some good vortec heads for only 150 bucks!! Came off a good running 350 96 vortec with only 89xxx miles on it.
Just ordered the beehive springs, voodoo cam,and comp beehives with the 600 bills i was saving for the gm performance votecs.

Hi or you can just go on Ebay and buy a set of fully dressed pro comp alum heads.
Whats up man. Yea I just bought all this stuff earlier today.

Is ebay stuff cool for chevy parts? I was looking at the crossflow intakes(air gap knock offs) just wondering if you heard anything of them?

Professional Products intakes are imported knock offs. Their finish isnt as nice as edelbrocks. However they do perform well. Way cheaper to boot. Search around on google, i believe one of the big magazines did a dyno test comparing them to their edelbrock counterparts.

Cool that's nice to know as I was really thinking of getting that crossflow intake. Finish isn't a problem because there is always powdercoat.

Ok heres my plan. The goal for the car is for it to be a strong street runner.

Im going to use the stock crank
want to get gm vortec heads
edelbrock air gap mani
650-750 holly or edelbrock carb
373 gears for the back
700r4 /2500 stall
full legnth headers
dual exhaust
msd ignition
summit 1.5 roller rockers
Ill runnig pump 91 gas so compression is going no more than 10:1
don't under carb your car lol I'd go with a 750 double pumper with four corner idle, that carb is amazing and its not that expensive on jegs.com
