Bushings on rear end ears.

Today was putting in my rear control arms upper and lower. I'm redoing the entire rearend with eaton springs, bilstein shocks,metco lower control arms and umi adjustable uppers. The lower arms were a breeze to put in but then i got to the uppers. So far i've taken one of the upper arms out but the bushing on the ear of the rear end is a b*#%h.I torched it first and didn't have the balls to finish doing that since my fuel lines were right above the burning bushing. Next i drilled all the way around the bushing and pulled chunks of rubber out of it. This damn thing will not come out. Advance has a tool to pull it out so i'm going to try that tomorrow. Can anyone clue me in on an easier way.
 
easiest way is to take a big *ss hammer to them. dont know if you have room to swing with it in the car though.

or you could try taking a chisel and collapse the metal sleeve in on itself then hammer.
 
No luck with hammering it. I had a chisel on the center pin trying to knock it out but i ended up hitting the gas tank and exhaust more then the chisel.
 
Used a punch to kcnock the sleeve out of mine cut the rubber into pieces using sawzall (use a lot of oil on the blade) used the punch to get those out then collapsed the cup with a chisel till it folded and pulled it out. To do this I pulled the whole rear of the car a lot more room that way to swing the hammer the sawzall etc, a little more work but a lot less headache!

I ended up going to advance and rented a ball joint removal kit(the one that looks like a big c clamp). I end up getting the center pin out ad pried the rubber out and air hammered the casing out. I messed up the edges of the bushing housing but i got it out. So today i went to put the new bushing in. I sanded the inside of the housing first and greased it and the bushing. Hammered it in till it wouldnt go any more. I used the kit from advanced and it moved a lil more i got a bolt and big washers and a big socket and it moved a little more. Basicly i'm pissed, sore, and I have to work the next couple of days so i have no more time to work on the car. I called umi and they told me the way i'm doing it is the way it has to be done it i dont have the special tool (that cost $80). :wtf: There has to be an easier way than this.
 
don't know if you finished up yet, but for installation I had the same problem so I had to install everything separate, I started with the cup and a block of wood pounded it in, next the bushing don't over grease it as it will work its way back out, to install i actually used a 3 armed puller with a washer about the size of the bushing, hooked the arms over the ears do not hook them on the opposite side of the cup, you will crush the cup, washer over the bushing and used a impact gun to press it in in, then last I tapped in the bushing sleeve with a hammer. Hope this gives an idea very important if done this way drink 12 pack of preferred beer when done! :lol:

I can finally pull up the site from work. I've got a lot done since my last update here, but i've got pics and still need to set the pinion angle for the rear. the eaton springs are a couple inches too tall so i'll eventually have to take them back out and send them back to be cut to size once my subs amps and etc are in the trunk.
