Hello all I have finally got around to paint stage of my car. Almost... Well I need to pick your brains. My car is factory paint. I have been told it is okay to lay primer on top of paint if it is factory. But I do have a chance of lift.
1. Can I lay primer on top of factory paint? If so what primer? I do have epoxy primer can I use that?
2. Any certain grit of paper I should use? I have a 5 inch orbital sand electric.
3. I do have some rust to sand blaster and fill on the quarters no holes just some thick surface. Does that effect primer?

If you only want to do it once, the OE paint will need to come off...especially if it's lacquer, which most A/G bodies were. Not a matter of IF it will fail, it's WHEN it will.

Also bear in mind that the thicker the coatings total, the easier it will chip. Most major paint makers say no more than 12 mils TOTAL.....that's primers, sealers, base clear. That's .012 of an inch.

I sanded mine down so the entire car was dull. Some spots needed fixing similar to yours.
I then took care of all the parking lot dings and dents and then sanded those areas.
My primer was an enamel based primer in grey.

My grit choice on sanding was first with 180 , 320, 800,1000, 3000 (wet sanding )
The paint I used to get the best results was from Eastwoods. Urethane base coat (color)
European clear coat.

Bear in mind this entire process took over 3 1/2 months to complete in my driveway.

Wash the car often with dish soap during the process. NOT CAR WASH SOAP......
