I was talking with the guys at work the other day and they told me id have to pull my engine out to install a new cam on big block. Then I also talked to my buddy that runs these cars on the dirt and he said all id have to do is remove the header panel and slip it out the front. Who do i believe? I really done want to remove the engine again if i don't have to. Thanks guys. :?:

DUDE!!

Don't pull your header panel for a cam change! Pull the engine. Dirt racers may do that, but their cars don't have to go back together properly or look nice afterward. They are gonna smash the crap out of it so why care?

You have a very high likelihood of breaking some piece of the header panel if you take it off just to swap the cam.

Just my two cents...

If you are careful, pulling the radiator, condensor, and header panel isn't that bad. I think it is easier than pulling the engine and you don't need a cherry picker. I pulled all that plus the radiator support to swap my engine/transmission so I didn't have to lift it so high since my garage doors aren't that tall.

dont know what car this is on but my first car a 78 4dr malibu no a/c I just pulled the rad then removed the grill not the header panel but just the grill and it came right out the hole but that was with a sbc if it makes a differance

x3 if all you're doing is the cam, just pull the rad and condensor, maybe the panel. granted, pulling the balancer and the cam are easier out of the car, but the amount of work to pull the engine is worse.
JIK, also pull the intake, valve covers and rockers before the cam/lifters (sorry if you knew this, but IDK if you do)

I think you have a bigger chance of breaking something removing the engine. The header panel is much less complicated to take off than pulling the engine.

yeah.. header panels are no big deal, just make sure you have a bag to put your nuts and bolts in and try and remember where everything goes! it took me 30 minutes to remove a header panel off a junk car and 15 minutes to take off the old one and put the new one on, so its just a matter of knowing what goes where.
