on the older quadrajets the way to check the movement of the power piston that hold the main rods is with a small screw driver. With engine off you will be able to push the power piston down but with engine at idle to power piston should be pulled down by the vacuum. The marked hole in the picture is where the screw driver is inserted...

There is nothing in Cliff's book about the e quadrajets, Doug Roe's book has info in his book about e quadrajets....
the best I could find are some Hayne's manuals with info my g.m. manuals don't go back that far, I forgot about the doug roe book I want to get a copy of that one also to read it for fun

I relied on Cliff's book for a long time. Bonnewagon (Mark) recommended Doug Roe's book as the bible of quadrajets so I order one and it is definitely much better than Cliff's book and with the detailed index at the back of the book it is easy to find what you are looking for. Get and you will not be disappointed.

I have both Roe and Cliff books. The idle air bleed setting gauge I have pushes down on the solenoid plunger, also have the small float gauge that can also measure the plunger travel.
