I can't figure it out on my olds 307 and I don't think my mechanic understands and digs deep enough into fixing the problem. What I have is a popping noise on my car. When I first star it up it idles fine but as soon as I step on the gas and accelerate it feels weird and sounds weird. Sometimes it stalls when I pull out into traffic. I drove it on the highway and it would only go up to 55 with the pedal to the floor, sometimes it even slowed down with the pedal to the floor! So when I got off the parkway I pulled into a parking lot and from a stop I mashed the gas all the way to the floor. I heard a POP (like a firecracker) and it even smelled like a little firecracker and then I got back on the road and could accelarate smoothly up to 85. I can't get it or figure it out. Any ideas? I think it has to do with the edebrock carb needing some sort of adjustment. I just don't feel safe in the car, I feel like it will stall when pulling out into traffic or worse - stall on the highway!

It sounds like it could be a plugged catalytic converter, do you still have them on your exhaust system? It could be the timing of your motor also, the timing being off would make a popping sound which is a backfire or missfire in one of the cylinders. If it runs fine when cold but runs worse when warm, i bet it is a clogged converter. When running the car for a while, or after a short drive get out and look under the car at the converter it will be red hot and glowing if it is plugged up it will also smell like rotten eggs!

X2 on the plugged converter.

What kind of shape is your ignition system in?

Another quick check is to remove your O2 sensor (don't drive it like that, just run it in park)... If it runs better with it out (since there's a free passage for the exhaust to escape) then that's probably your issue.

The cat on the Jeep I used to have broke apart and slid down the exhaust pipe, clogging it, and killing the motor. Couldn't figure out the problem, until we popped out the O2 sensor, and it was finally able to start and run.

I had a similar problemt with my 307/th200. I'm not saying it's the same problem, but mine turned out to be the transmission was shot and not allowing it over 50 mph. It would want to die from a stop when you stepped on it (which couldv'e been a carb tuning issue in retrospect), and 3rd gear would never engage. Even had it stall a few times trying to turn over 3rd before I found out my top speed was about 55 mph

Now the popping thing, not sure there, but it seems like you've already got a few leads to what it might be

It doesn't seem to me like it'd be the converter (but who knows?). My problems didn't go away after removing my airpump, exhaust, and other emissions junk. I think have your carb properly tuned and timing set correctly and then go from there, keep us updated

I don't have cats or any emissons on the car so it elminates that. I still have the Metric 200 so it could be that I guess but its weird because once it does that POP! it can drive to 80+ mph.

So what DO you have as far as carb and distributor? It's a little difficult to help without all the information.

Carb is an edelbrock and the distributor is a MSD and I looked at it and everything looked fine. So i dunno....

Torque converter lock up sticking?

Just curious, when was the last time you changed trans. fluid?

I never had that happen before in a car so maybe? Transmission is the weak part of my car. Its a 307 with 275 hp and a 200M.
