Car backfiring

It sounds like you have two issues. First is where did you get the distributor and did you get the distributor with the vacuum advance unit or are you still using the one hooked to the ECU?
SSmooth84 You really need to answer this question^^^. If the computer is controlling the timing then you're setting the timing wrong.

I am still using the computer with no vacum on the carb its like the original one. I have headers and installled a 02 sensor below to help get a better reading . Im gonna get this distrubitor replace and hope thats the problem . I think it just gave out fornsome reason since im not getting a spark from it.

Hi; hope we can help you out. Can you post the link you reference.

With out the ECU you lose some of the timing control. While you don't have vac advance, you can try heavier weights and lighter springs on your mechanical advance. It will make advance come on sooner.

I started out with an 81 TA which was the year GM standardized the C3 (CCC) system. I pulled the Q Jet off and replaced with Holley Q Jet replacement carb, temporarily. As soon as I could I went to dealership and bought distributor for the 80 TA.

I didn't have any back fire, just very sluggish. Once I replaced the Distributor I was able to tune and got it running as it should.

I put in the new distributor and it starts right up ill take it for a test drive tomorrow. Im still confused on how to find top dead center. I used the thunb on the spark plug to test for pressure at first I got the balancer line to land on the zero mark but it would start . I then got it to stop at about 8 degrees btdc and it fired right up I thought having it at zero then adjust the dizzy is the way to do it .
