Good Day!

I have a 78 Malibu that is set-up for road racing. During high G, but slow corners, the car will die. It is an automatic with a 350 chevy engine. The carb is an edelbrock. The car currently has power steering.

It seems like it is a steering related issue.

I have adjusted the floats to specs and even tried moving higher and lower than specs and have the same problem. I have raised and lowered the fuel pressure from 13 psi to 2.5 psi.

The idle has been raised to 1200 rpm.

I believe it is the steering set-up because if you turn the wheel while sitting still, it will lower the idle by about 4-500 rpm. I think the loads the steering system sees while in a high G corner are higher than sitting still and turning the wheel.

If anybody has any suggestions, I would appreciate it!

Does anybody know what the difference in ratio is between a power box and a manual box?

You could try swapping a manual steering box from an '82-'92 S-10...

Sounds fuel related to me. I'd get rid of the Edelbrock carb and put a Holley on it for starters.

Do you run a stock tank or fuel cell? Electric or mechanical fuel pump?

Blake442,
With that steering box from the S-10, would you be able to use your existing pitman arm????

Once the car has taken set in a turn there should be no demand on the pump only when turning the wheel.I agree with Blake442 that it sounds fuel related, does it happen both left and right or only one way? are you running light on fuel there for uncovering the pick-up? Also dont over look the bulkhead connector @ the firewall or the column. I had a camaro that would die when taking a corner hard and it came to be that the tilt column had just enough play that it would kill the ignition.

its the carb. i have run 3 diffrent edelbrock carbs and they all do the same thing. also a freind of mine has run a couple diffrent edelbrocks and he reports the same. change it out with a holley and i bet the problem goes away

Ive ran a couple edelbrocks and its what I have currently, honestly It could be the carb do i think if you changed to a holley it would work... no they are both carbs.......... they both work. If your turning that it might be draining the carb same reason why off roaders use fuel injection and not carbs.. when they take weird and unusual climbs and crawls the carb floods itself. Also 13 psi is way to much for carbed car. and 2.5 is not enough lol 4 to 7 is about perfect

How much gas do you usually have in the tank? Maybe fuel is sloshing around too much and making it run dry.

The float positions are different. Holley's are front and back, Edelbrock is side by side. This can cause the fuel to cut off when turning sharp. Right? I've always had the same problem with my Edelbrock carbs, so as soon as I can I'm gettin' a Holley!

I've heard conflicting reviews...

Some say they swapped to the stock G-body arm, some say that they just used the S-10 arm...
I have heard that you have to use your g-body arm but like you said "conflicting reviews"

My malibu used to die all the time whenever I took a decent turn. I'm running a 600cfm edelbrock sbc 350 and tuned that thing to death and never made one bit of difference. I'm using a stock tank.

But then I swapped in a remanufactured quick ratio steering box for an 86' monte carlo ss from autozone and it corrected the problem instantly. I haven't had an issue since and I road race my malibu as well.
