how do i adjust the idle mixtures on a 79 305 chevy engine?

If your mixture screws are not capped off with tamper resistant caps, You screw them in (clockwise) until *lightly* seated. Then back them out 3-3/8 - 3-1/2 turns out (360 degrees = 1 turn) This would be a base setting & may or may not need further adjustment for fine tuning.

Do as suggested, but use a vacuum gauge and adjust for the highest vacuum/smoothest idle you can.
