got it in tonite and it seems to run pretty good and thanks for the tips bonne... I have the idle mixture tool but I could not find my vacuum gauge which I use to adjust the idle mixture screws....I turn one in to about one turn then turn it out till I get the highest vacuum then do the next one and that's all it usually takes. I set them up for now along with a choke adjustment and it's good to go. I know about the other adjustments but since it's a new rebuilt carb I'll drive it for a day or two and see what it needs and then my main carb should be ready. I'll keep this one in for now till it's adjusted properly and store it as a spare. It's probably not running at it's peak but that tweaked carb sure beats this one out for performance and probably on fuel economy as well. I pay $325 to get it tweaked for the motor and it's worth every penny. The nice thing is once he does it he doesn't ask to for anymore money, even for gaskets, but I throw him 4 or 5 twenties when he cleans it and tunes it up for me.

oh and bonne about that stovepipe for the choke, I don't understand why there would be a vacuum leak if left open since it doesn't lead to the body of the carb...I have left it open and there doesn't seem to be a problem with a vacuum leak...and your right about the rear breaker being an inherent problem but I plan to change it out to a front breaker soon as I snag the parts off a donor carb, I'll grab a newer choke housing at the same time

PGP, I'm glad it's working for you. I love Q-jets, they work great when set up right. The hot air choke has a plastic tube that goes between the choke housing and the carb body. You've seen them in rebuild kits and wondered what the hell it was, it's a short plastic tube with a collar in the middle. It is a calibrated vacuum source to draw hot air from the tube that goes into the manifold exhaust crossover and into the choke coil housing. If an electric choke coil housing is swapped in, the plastic tube is in the way, as it inserts into the housing. Many times it is just chucked and the hole left as is, which continues to suck air, not a lot, but any vacuum leak on a Q-jet is a problem. That's why the hole in the carb body should be plugged with a bit of lead and tapped flush to the body. Often a hard to cure rough idle can be traced to this.
